Despite a chunk of the team missing, Moffat County girls golf shot well, carding some low scores in Utah.
The Bulldogs were at a tournament at Dinaland Golf Course in Vernal, Utah, missing some members due to sickness and coming off a spring break in which they still haven’t been able to hit at a range in Craig.
But they still performed, with senior Caitlin Harjes shooting 94 to take fifth place at the tournament.
Katelyn Peroulis (113) was next for the team and wasn’t especially pleased with her play, but she took the tough day in stride, knowing she has plenty of time to improve.
“I did okay — it wasn’t my best,” Peroulis said. “It’s hard to hit the shots we need to when we haven’t gotten to practice them as much yet.”
Peroulis was referring to the first few shots in a hole, when more distance is required. The Bulldogs have had to work more on their short game so far this season, spending much of their practice time indoors.
Lexi Gonzalez and Hannah Beckett both shot well, posting 122 and 128, respectively. It was a major improvement for Gonzalez from a year ago.
“I played alright today,” she said. “My chipping and putting were good. It felt pretty good to take off a whole lot of strokes from last year,”
The round gave Gonzalez confidence moving forward, she said, and has her pushing to keep dropping her score.
Beckett is coming off an injury last season and wasn’t able to play. At Dinaland, she proved to herself that her game is picking up.
“I did pretty good. I’ve really improved since the start of the season, and it showed today,” she said about Dinaland. “My long shots were actually pretty good, which really encouraged me and showed me I can keep shooting lower.”
Coach Ann Marie Roberts said the team stuck around after playing the 18 holes and hit balls at the range at Dinaland, which showed her what her team is all about.
“It’s just going to be a matter of getting on a range more and working on those shots,” Roberts said of her team’s outlook for the rest of the year. “After 18 holes today, they wanted to go out and practice that stuff. It shows their dedication and what these girls want to accomplish.”
