Jessica Mogus: A better education

My daughter is a first-grader at East Elementary here in Craig and I am baffled by some of the newsletters I receive.

Last year, I received a newsletter stating that the school needed parents to volunteer as crossing guards to ensure our children are safe exiting the school. The parking situation really is a mess with the school being seated at the top of the hill and only having one tiny parking lot for parents to pick up their children. One day, I walked up to the school to get my child and was accused by a staff member of parking in the staff parking lot. I informed her I walked there and did not drive. How incredibly rude.

I agree that crossing guards should be in place for the safety of all the students, staff and parents. I also think people volunteering their time is wonderful; however, what are the teachers doing during that 15 minutes after classes let out that they cannot help with this?

On Friday, I came home and pulled out a newsletter with a photocopied book that read “Please help your child with these words every night for about ten minutes, WE DO NOT HAVE MUCH TIME DEDICATED to just sight words in our day so your help is greatly appreciated.” There are 280 words in the book that are suppose to be known by the end of first grade.

I help my child with reading every night, so that is not a problem. My problem is, what are the teachers doing that they do not have enough “time” to dedicate to teaching them these words? I am scared for my child’s future if we stay in Craig. Moffat County is ranked at the bottom of Colorado’s school system.

The very sad thing is we live in an area with industry and good paying jobs. Every year downtown I see a big sign that promotes us donating to Moffat County United Way. Half a million dollars to United Way? Maybe that money should be put to use in our community to give our children a better education.
