At the beginning of Thursday morning, Moffat County High School senior Jay Hayes was wearing a ball cap. Later that day, his head apparel was slightly different.
Actually, a lot of different.
As part of homecoming week, MCHS announced the recipients of royalty honors Thursday, with Hayes and fellow senior Allie Ehlers taking the distinction of homecoming king and queen.
Hayes said he was more than a little shocked to win, especially since he was the last to learn of his nomination earlier in the week.
“I accidentally slept in from school Tuesday, and Mr. Gaffney called to let me know I was nominated, so I figured I’d better get to school,” he said. “I’m going to wear (this crown) all day.”
A boy and girl from each class were selected from a ballot of five nominees. Those getting a sash as class attendants included seniors Junior Gonzalez and Nicole Ferree; juniors Justice Young and Jodi Hough; sophomores Noah Booth and Aryona Shaffer; and freshmen DeVante Moore-Johnson and Emma Samuelson.
Teachers Evan Gaffney and Lauren Kartus were selected as the honored faculty. As the advisor for student council, Gaffney knew the student body had voted for him before anyone else, having counted the ballots.
Kartus was more taken aback by the win.
“I was pretty surprised,” she said. “I’m excited, and it’s just great that the kids picked me.”
Bryan Gonzales and Stephanie Zimmerman were picked as honored alumni, both 1993 MCHS graduates. Both Craig residents were notified last week.
Gonzales is employed with the Craig Police Department, and Zimmerman teaches at Sandrock Elementary School.
“It feels special, I wasn’t expecting it,” Zimmerman said. “I see (Homecoming) every year in Craig, but I never thought I’d be in it.”
Gonzales said he was pleased to be considered by the student body.
“There’s a lot of great kids here,” he said.
Royalty, attendants and honored alumni and faculty will all ride in today’s homecoming parade and the pre-game ceremony later that night before the football team faces off against Montezuma-Cortez.
