Hayden volleyball wins 5th in a row

— Another league opponent up, another big win for Hayden High School volleyball.

The Tigers stretched their winning streak to five games Friday night with a three-game sweep of Plateau Valley.

Hayden easily won the first game, 25-13. After falling behind early in Game 2, head coach Christene Planansky’s squad rallied at the 20-point mark and pushed Plateau Valley to the brink.

Game 3 was “too close for comfort,” as Planansky put it, but her resilient Tigers rallied through a neck-and-neck contest to win, 25-22.

Planansky praised the play of Abi Velasquez, who opened up the game on a tear, scoring points on 10 serves in a row.

Chancey Graham controlled the Hayden presence at the net with blocks, while Jordan Temple and Olivia Zehner paced the Tigers in the kills department.

Despite Hayden’s sweep, Planansky said her team has been looking ahead to Saturday afternoon’s showdown with undefeated and league-leading Paonia.

“They’re really excited about it,” Planansky said. “They want to beat Paonia really bad. They want to show them they can hold their own with them. That’s the important part.”
