Craig man arrested on suspicion of child sexual assault

— A 43-year-old Craig man was arrested Friday on suspicion of child sexual assault.

The suspect is charged in Moffat County Court with one count of sexual assault, a Class 4 felony; two counts of sexual assault, both misdemeanors; and one count of providing alcohol to a minor, a misdemeanor.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim is between 15 and 17 years old. The suspect first contacted the victim using Facebook, according to court documents.

The crime is alleged to have taken place from April 14 to 30 following what began as a brief but consensual physical relationship, according to court documents.

The sexual assault charge was filed as a Class 4 felony in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes because the suspect is more than 10 years older than the alleged victim.

The presumptive sentence for a Class 4 felony conviction is two to six years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, or as long as 12 years under exceptional circumstances, according to Colorado law.

Brett Barkey, 14th Judicial District Attorney, is prosecuting the case.
