Lance Scranton: Playoffs and performance

Great performances are rewarded with an appearance in the playoffs. Our high school basketball teams made a spectacular debut in Class 3A this season by posting excellent records before bowing out in the regional finals.

The boys and girls teams were led by a host of talented players, and while painful to lose, the future for both teams looks promising. Seniors on both squads were instrumental in helping transition from the highly competitive 4A ranks to the super-charged 3A division.

Times and teams are changing as Moffat County High School finds itself on the opposite end of a student enrollment equation that lists us as one of the smallest teams in our football division, but now as one of the big schools in Class 3A for all the other sports.

Unless classification numbers are changed, historic rivalries with Steamboat Springs, Rifle, Palisade, Delta and Glenwood will be replaced by challenges from schools like Basalt, Aspen, Roaring Fork and Coal Ridge.

Regardless of opponents, we have an opportunity to advance the vision of our school through the competitive nature of sports and extracurricular activities. Winning is fun, and challenging students to work hard beyond the classroom is what helps make a community rally around the idea of a shared destiny.

Parental expectations should demand their children get involved in their school. Then coaches will find themselves managing teams whose expectations are being shared in the hearts of the entire community. Students begin to realize anew that competing is an act of having pride in themselves, their school and the community.

Performance is still the bottom line for winning the big games, and our basketball teams were great examples of performance this season.

Coach, fan or parent — it’s great to be a Bulldog!

At least, that’s what I think.
