The Craig Sea Sharks have been working hard and improving during this early part of the summer, but now it’s time for that work to pay off at home.

The youth swimming team from Craig will host its only home meet of the season, beginning Friday morning and finishing Sunday afternoon.

Sea Sharks coach Paul Jones said there will be five or six teams from across the Western Slope in attendance at the ABC meet, which will pit swimmers from ages five to 18 against one another. Jones and swimmers are looking forward to the meet.

“It’s nice for our swimmers because we get to swim in a pool they’re used to,” Jones said of hosting the meet at the Craig Swimming Complex on Washington Street. “It’s great for our younger swimmers, because they can get anxious going to another pool and having everything be a little different than what they practice with.”

The ABC meet being in Craig also means the team doesn’t have to travel this weekend, which means nearly every local swimmer will compete.

“It’s nice to have the ability to host a home meet because we get to see more of our swimmers,” Jones said.

Dillon McIntosh said he is excited for the meet and hopes to swim in butterfly, what he considers to be his best event. He and all the other Sea Sharks, especially in the younger ranks, have improved significantly this summer and will hope to show that off this weekend.

“We’ve seen a lot of time drops all across the board,” Jones said of the swimmers. “We’ve had less and less DQs (disqualifications) from silly things, so it’s good to see them improving.”

The ABC meet begins at 10 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. During all three days, there will be a break after the morning swimming and an afternoon session as well. Jones is excited to get it going.

“It’s going to be a great meet, and I think we’ll see a lot of swimmers do well,” he said.
