Senior Spotlight: Beauty still remains in fire territories

While watching television and listening to the announcer describe the devastation that occurred in the fires that still rage in Colorado, I remembered a trip I took with my daughter Jane several years ago.

Our original goal had been Glacier Lake, but we had to change plans as they weren’t letting anyone up there due to a forest fire that had not been contained. We changed our route and headed to Virginia City and Dillon, Mont., instead.

In the distance hung a curtain of smoke from that fire and as we followed the outskirts of Yellowstone National Park, you could see the results of a fire that had taken place.

The blackened ground had mile after mile of charred and burnt trees, and the absence of any signs of life — animal, human or otherwise — gave you the feeling of being in a nightmare.

Coming back from our exploration in Montana, we went through Yellowstone and were able to take in the beauty of the natural wonders of the hot springs, waterfalls, animals and all that is Yellowstone.

It made me think that although the outskirts were blackened, there still was beauty, and even though life may hand us a lot — and our world seems blackened with distress — that there is hope as long as there is faith and love.

The fires will leave charred remains but through the ash will come seedlings of trees and life will go on. If you can get past the horror of the fire there can be beauty. The picture now is only a silhouette of the colorful beauty it will be again.
