Craig wrestlers grapple at Paonia

Seven wrestlers from Craig tested their skills against some of the best wrestlers in Colorado and the surrounding areas during the weekend.

The group of wrestlers from Craig was at the fourth-annual Paonia Summer Duals, an event that attracted more than 500 wrestlers from six different states to Western Colorado for three full days of wrestling Friday through Sunday.

More than 30 schools were represented at the event, but some combined wrestlers helped fill out the 18 weight classes. Six Moffat County High School wrestlers and one from Craig Middle School competed along with other fill-in wrestlers to go 4-8 in their twelve duals Saturday and Sunday.

Giving up points in some weight classes and bringing a young team to wrestle against 5A schools, 4-8 wasn’t a bad result for summer competition. The Bulldogs got a strong performance from incoming senior Jesse Demoor, who went 7-1 in his matches. Demoor advanced the furthest of any Moffat County wrestler at the state meet last season.

Curtis Bowser also did well at 285 lbs., posting a 4-3 record.

Junior Ashlee Griffiths, along with freshmen Devlyn Mosman, Deven Mosman, Colton Hall and eighth-grader Miki Klimper also represented Moffat County in Paonia.
