The countdown begins this week and most kids you talk to won’t have any idea, or want to admit, what is just around the corner. School officially starts on Aug. 26 but a whole bunch of stuff gets going even earlier.
The football staff has been occupying the weight room and practice fields all summer long with three-day workout sessions for athletes from grades seventh through 12th, the seventh through ninth-graders in the morning and the 10th through 12th graders in the evening. They’ll also be doing weight training two days a week with speed training sandwiched in between. We have averaged almost 50 in the morning session falling off to about 15 in the evening.
Summer is a great time to relax, refresh and catch up on all the things that we want to get done before school begins again. When it does, we all get caught up in the frenzy of activities, contests and demands. We’re all hoping our children will benefit from the competitive athletics that the school district sponsors and our local booster club has done a great job of promoting the critical link between extra-curricular activity and school success.
Many coaches sacrifice a major part of their summer to being available to students for practice, camps and training that is part-and-parcel of what is necessary these days to be prepared for the upcoming seasons.
The ideal is for everyone to show up when the practice time is available and when the weight room is open, but the reality is very different. Summer stirs up a sense of free-spiritedness in many kids and we don’t see them very much until official practice starts.
It’s unfortunate because it’s just an hour three times a week that is going to make a huge difference for those who have chosen to show up.
At least that’s what I think!
