Weekend thunderstorms to cool off Craig

— Craig residents are about to get cooled off a bit in the coming days.

High and dry temperatures in Craig are getting slightly cooler with rain and thunderstorms expected throughout the weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

“The Four Corners is favored to get more showers, but the Craig area can get showers this time of year. So expect mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms and rain showers. Some of those showers could be heavy,” Grand Junction Forecaster Joe Ramey said.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid to high 80s for the next several days. On Thursday, the high was 96 degrees at the Craig-Moffat County Airport, Ramey said.

Despite the forecasted moisture, unincorporated Moffat County and the Bureau of Land Management remain in Stage 1 fire restrictions. That means no open fires or open burning.

Stage 1 restrictions in unincorporated Moffat County and on BLM land, according to documents, prohibit:

■ Open burning, except fires and campfires that are contained in fire grates that were developed by campgrounds and picnic grounds, charcoal grills and wood-burning stoves at private homes in areas cleared of all flammable materials.

■ The sale or use of fireworks.

■ Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame, except within an area that is cleared of flammable material.

■ Outdoor smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

■ Operating a chain saw without a USDA- or SAE-approved spark-arresting device.

“This will give us teeth to enforce this ordinance,” said Todd Wheeler, of the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

Those caught violating fire restrictions could face a $200 fine.
