Yampa Valley Golf Course is ready for women locally and from the surrounding states to take the course during this weekend, as the prestigious Ladies Silver Bullet tournament comes to town.
Similar to the Cottonwood Classic on the men’s side, the Silver Bullet is a multiple-day, stroke-play tournament that brings in more competitive golfers than any other women’s tournament during the summer. This year, 62 golfers from three states will square off during 36 holes Saturday and Sunday to determine a champion.
It is not among the biggest tournaments YVGC hosts during the summer, but it is one of the most competitive.
“This is definitely one of them that I would say is higher maintenance,” said YVGC head golf pro David Hardison. “You want to put forward a good product, be organized and get to show off the course.”
All golfers will be chasing defending champion Kim Eaton, of Tempe, Ariz., but will have their hands full. Eaton is a scratch golfer and has been a staple at the top of the Silver Bullet results in recent years.
This year’s Silver Bullet does not include as high a percentage of Craig golfers as play in other tournaments, but it got a strong response from outside the city. Golfers from the Denver metropolitan area, Grand Junction and Utah will be out in large numbers compared to the other events at the course this year.
“It seems like we’ll have a good mix,” Hardison said.
The tournament tees off at 9 a.m. Saturday, and at the same time again Sunday, with groups beginning on the first and tenth holes both days. Hardison is looking forward to a good event.
“Like the Cottonwood it’s stroke play,” he said. “Eighteen less holes, but it’s still just the golfers out there on their own, with every shot counting. That’s a fun way to play.”
