Rig Count for Jan. 12

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 52 rigs online — 3 less than Jan. 4, and 19 less than Jan. 13, 2012.
• Wyoming has 49 rigs online — 1 more than Jan. 4, and 2 more than Jan. 13, 2012.
• The U.S. has 1,761 rigs online — 1 less than Jan. 4, and 226 less than Jan. 13, 2012.
Of those rigs:
— 1,691 are working on land, 17 in inland waters, and 53 offshore.
— 1,323 are drilling for oil, 434 for natural gas.
— 182 wells are directional, 1,119 are horizontal, and 460 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed up 90 cents from a week ago at $93.82 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed up $1 from a week ago at $81.10 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed up $1 from a week ago at $80.63 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed down $3.48 from a week ago at $77.44 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down one penny from a week ago at $3.19 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
