Skype-A-Lawyer Night a new take on old idea

Northwest Colorado Legal Services coordinator Sherri Ferree has revived the "meet with a lawyer" forum and given it a technological update.

Northwest Colorado Legal Services has teamed up with The Memorial Hospital in Craig to bring Moffat County residents Skype–A-Lawyer night.

The event takes place the second Thursday of every month. The next 5:30 p.m. this Thursday at TMH.

A free service offered to low income individuals who qualify, Ferree said the event is meant to provide quick advice for those who need it but who don’t necessarily need an attorney.

“Moffat doesn’t have a whole bunch of attorneys and the few we do have are very busy,” Ferree said. “I started drawing from some in Steamboat, worked with the hospital and even got an attorney out of Grand County.”

The program began a few years back when Ferree got attorney David White to make himself available at the library once a month to offer free advice regarding civil law.

“They didn’t need a lawyer, they needed quick advice,” Ferree said.

Ferree said topics often covered under civil law deal with family law, either divorce or custody, housing matters such as eviction, and consumer issues such as collections.

Although drop-ins are welcome, Ferree said it’s better to pre-qualify and set an appointment for the night to expedite the process and guarantee a spot.

“We prefer them to pre-qualify in advance,” Ferree said. “That way we know they’re going to qualify.”

Though attendance started out a little slower than Ferree had initially hoped, she said it will take time for people to get used to the idea of Skyping a lawyer rather than walking in and talking face to face.

Ferree said clients meet privately in a 20-30 minute one-on-one session with a lawyer via Skype.

“This is an excellent resource for people in Moffat County and we want to get the word out,” Ferree said.
