Rig Count for Jan. 5, 2013

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 55 rigs online — 2 less than Dec. 28, and 22 less than Jan. 6, 2012.
• Wyoming has 48 rigs online — 1 less than Dec. 28, and 7 less than Jan. 6, 2012.
• The U.S. has 1,762 rigs online — 1 less than Dec. 28, and 245 less than Jan. 6, 2012.
Of those rigs:
— 1,691 are working on land, 20 in inland waters, and 51 offshore.
— 1,318 are drilling for oil, 439 for natural gas.
— 170 wells are directional, 1,112 are horizontal, and 480 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed up $2.05 from a week ago at $92.92 a barrel on the New York
Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed up $2 from a week ago at $80.10 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed up $2 from a week ago at $79.63 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed up $1.05 from a week ago at $80.92 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down 15 cents from a week ago at $3.20 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
