— Jesse DeMoor’s dreams of a state championship ended early Friday, but the Moffat County High School junior bounced back from a defeat at the state wrestling championships and dominated his first consolation match.

Now he’ll wrestle today in the consolation semifinals of the 182-pound Class 3A bracket at the tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

DeMoor hung in the tournament, but his two teammates both lost out.

For freshman Issik Herod, the day was disappointing but far from depressing.

The freshman won his first career match at state in the morning, getting a pin in the first round of consolation action at 120 pounds. He took down Jefferson’s Lawrence Salazar 1 minutes, 45 seconds into the first period.

“Coach told me to watch for a move that I’ve ben running all year. I stuck five or six kids with it, and so I took it when I got the chance and I pinned him,” Herod said.

Herod couldn’t match that feat in his second consolation round match. He was right with Christian Guerrero, of Dolores Huerta Preparatory, for the first half of the match, trailing by one, 8-7, when Guerrero took a short injury break.

It was all Guerrero when the action resumed, however, and Herod fell, 15-8.

“I tried and tried,” he said. “I made one mistake.”

Brayden Peterson, meanwhile, lost to Ben Guiterrez, of University, 9-5
