DENVER (AP) — Work has begun on a new memorial in Aurora that will commemorate Coloradoans who died in service to their country.
Designed to resemble the shape of the Rocky Mountains, the $700,000 Colorado Freedom Memorial will list the names of nearly 6,000 fallen servicemen and servicewomen. The Denver Post reports (http://bit.ly/14KdimG ) organizers broke ground Saturday.
Rick Crandall, president of the Colorado Freedom Memorial Foundation, says the memorial "is providing all of us an opportunity to make sure we never forget that loss."
Crandall, a morning radio host for KEZW, formed the foundation after broadcasting live from the American cemetery at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, in 2000.
The memorial, which will list casualties from every branch of the military, beginning with the Spanish-American War, should be finished by May 26.
