A small contingent of Craig youths came to the Sandrock Elementary gym Saturday morning to show off their sharpshooting basketball skills.

Local children participated in the annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot, where they pitted their free throw shooting capabilities against each other for the chance to keep competing from the free throw line.

The Craig Elks Lodge #1577 hosts a Hoop Shoot every year that gives participants a chance to move on to regional, state and national competitions for scholarship money.

“I think it’s one of the neatest things, with the scholarships, that the Elks do,” said Frank Sadvar, who organizes and runs the event each year.

Despite a small turnout at the 2013 Hoop Shoot, there were some participants who look primed to compete at the next level. In the girls 8-9 age group, Jacie Evans’s consistent form was evident through all 25 attempts, earning her a chance to shoot at the regional event in Leadville.

“I practiced yesterday at the middle school,” Evans said of developing her form, adding that she was happy with the way she shot Saturday.

Seth White made 17 of 25 attempts from the 15-foot foul line in the boys 10-11 group to advance. He missed all five of his warm-up shots before getting hot when it mattered.

“It made no sense,” White said of the contrast.

The other age groups each had just one shooter, but they put in good performances.

“No matter how you do today, you’re winners,” Sadvar said to the kids before the shoot began. “Period. You’re here, and you’re not out on the street running around. So, good job.”
