Downtown Craig looks ready for the holiday season.
Two local businesses moved to downtown in the fall for better visibility, and a new salon opened up in the area.
Kelly Davidson moved her pet shop, Paddy Whack, from 400 Mack Lane to a vacant storefront on Victory Way across from Mauka Café & Bakery in October. Since then, she has marked an increase in sales.
“I think we can tell that it’s picking up,” she said.
The numbers show it.
“In November we hit a record sales month,” Davidson said. “I hope December stays that high.”
She moved from a warehouse building space on the other end of town to a prominent 3,000-square-foot store with a large window front; perfect for the artful display she hired Nina Shroyer to paint to attract customers.
The new store gives her 500 extra square feet for more merchandise space and a larger grooming area. It’s an opportunity that provides exactly what her customers need, she said.
Another existing Craig business also made a big move.
Intermountain Appliance headed downtown in mid-November after being on the corner of Fourth and School streets since 1998. The move allowed the store to expand its showroom and become part of the Downtown Business Association, said owner Phil Vallem.
The 6,000-square-foot store gave the business about 1,000 square feet in extra showroom, he said.
“We’ve probably seen more traffic after Thanksgiving this year than last,” he said. “It’s already better.”
It’s helping bring in profits, Vallem said, but also is improving the downtown community.
“This building has been empty for four to five years,” he said. “I would think it would give people a better impression of downtown overall.”
To add to downtown’s growth, a brand new business also opened in the area.
Megan Jones, owner and stylist of the new salon, Capo, opened shop Oct. 7, and foot traffic has picked up.
“It’s been really busy and steady,” she said. “A pure blessing.”
Jones opened up and rented out a chair to fellow stylist, Angela Doane.
“I wanted to start my own business and fulfill my own dreams,” Jones said.
So far that pursuit has been successful, she said.
“I love moving to the downtown area,” Jones said. “I get more business and walk-ins. It’s a friendly atmosphere.”
The attitude of Capo’s business neighbors is really positive, she said.
“We all give each other support,” she said about the other downtown businesses.
