Craig Sports Briefs for Aug. 18, 2013: CMS fall sports begin this week

Craig Middle School’s fall sports season is nearing, with football, volleyball and cross-country on the docket for seventh- and eighth-graders.

There will be an informational meeting for parents at 7 p.m. Monday, where parents can meet Athletic Director Rick Schmitz and the fall sports coaches. There will be fall schedules and other information discussed.

Fall sports practices also begin Monday morning.

For the rest of the first week, football practice will begin at 6 a.m., with equipment checkout at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Parks and Rec seeking football officials

The Craig Parks and Recreation youth football season is approaching quickly, and the league is looking for officials.

Prospective officials must be at least 14 years old and inquire about the opportunity by Monday. For more information, call Craig Parks and Rec at 970-826-2006.

Pool league in Craig begins Sept. 15

The Craig Billiards Congress of America pool 8-ball league begins Sept. 15. League events take place at Popular Bar, 24 W. Victory Way.

Parks and Rec basketball signups open

The youth basketball leagues through Craig Parks and Recreation are open for registration.

The leagues for third- and fourth-grade boys and girls, and fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls, will begin with a mandatory skills days Sept. 23 through 26 at Sunset Elementary School. The skills days and league seasons will focus on teaching children the basics of the game and help develop an understanding of the rules of basketball.

Dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding and offensive and defensive principles all will be covered.

The leagues will begin games in October. Registration closes Sept. 18.
