Moffat County’s best on the links were out at Yampa Valley Golf Course during the weekend, battling throughout two days to determine the top golfers from the area in 2013.

The 2013 Club Championship played out Saturday and Sunday, with 44 men and eight women playing 36 holes for bragging rights over other club members for the next year.

For the third year in a row, Dan Brown, of Craig, won the men’s championship, shooting 151 during the two days to defend his title. Brown entered the tournament a bit more nervous this time, he said, because he hadn’t been playing his best golf this summer.

But a round of 73 on Saturday put him four strokes ahead and gave him a cushion for Sunday’s golf.

Saturday "was probably my best round of the year, and today was more like I had been playing,” Brown said about his 78 score on Sunday. “You get back into the tournament situations, and it’s a little bit different than just playing.”

Brown feels blessed to be in the position he is.

“It feels good to win, definitely,” he said. “Really, I am lucky to still be able to play this game the way I am.”

John Doane took second for the men, six strokes behind at 157.

On the women’s side, Lani Cleverly won it all, shooting 178 over the 36 holes. Cleverly was seven shots back and in a tie for third after Saturday, but her 85 on Sunday was good enough to make the comeback complete and win by two strokes.

“I played really well today. I was surprised that I was able to do that,” Cleverly said about her second round. “Usually, if I can get under 90, that’s great.”

Other women’s golfers posted low scores Sunday but couldn’t quite hang. Mary Nelson shot 88, and Sue Utzinger shot 89, while Patty Bruchez, the leader after shooting 86 on Saturday, posted a 97.

It was a fun weekend of golf for all involved, Brown said.

“There’s great camaraderie at the club championship,” he said. “It’s not like the Cottonwood with all the pressure and the stress. Everybody is having fun.”
