New teachers eager to start at Moffat County schools

— The Craig Daily Press recently met with the new teachers hired by the Moffat County School District for the 2013-14 school year. With so many new employees, the paper will run teacher profiles in this week’s and next Saturday’s education section. Here are how the new educators filled out our questionnaires.

Jen Bergstrom

Name: Jen Bergstrom

I will be teaching: Seventh-grade math at Craig Middle School

Hometown: No hometown — I consider Alaska home and Colorado is where I grew up.

Where I received my education: University of Alaska, Anchorage

Most recent teaching job: Burchell High School in Wasilla, Alaska

Favorite student moment (so far): I can’t think of one, there are too many.

Why I chose to be a teacher: I didn’t choose it, it chose me.

Goal for this school year: To successfully juggle providing a high-quality education for my students with leaving enough time for myself and family.

DeAnne Blackwell

Name: DeAnne Blackwell

I will be teaching: Fourth grade at East Elementary

Hometown: West Plains, Mo.

Where I received my education: Missouri State University

Most recent teaching job: Six years of grade school in Pampa, Texas, and two years of sixth-grade science in El Dorado Springs, Mo.

Favorite book: “Tuesdays with Morrie”

Favorite movie: Action and comedies

Favorite student moment (so far): In the past eight years, I have had many wonderful moments. I love that each year brings great moments, like when I had a snake get loose in my room.

Why I chose to be a teacher: To make a difference in students' lives.

Goal for this school year: To set high, attainable goals for my students and challenge their minds.

One fun fact about me: I am an avid bow hunter.

Name: Cherie Blomquist

Favorite book: “Kitchen Help” or “Dinner with a Perfect Stranger”

Favorite movie: “Dances with Wolves”

Favorite student moment (so far): A student saying, “Wow, I read that all by myself.”

Why I chose to be a teacher: I love kids and helping them to learn.

Goal for this school year: To make it the best year for my students.

One fun fact about me: Moose are my favorite animals.

Why I chose to be a teacher: I enjoy working with kids.

Favorite student moment (so far): Reading the student evaluations at the end of my first semester of teaching.

Why I chose to be a teacher: Summer vacation! Just kidding ... I have a lot of teachers in my family, and I’ve always viewed it as a fun and fulfilling profession.

Goal for this school year: For my students to learn something worthwhile and enjoy the process.

One fun fact about me: I previously worked as a stand-in and photo double on the TV show “Touch.”

Favorite student moment (so far): When former students contact me and tell me the impact I have had in their lives.

Why I chose to be a teacher: My passion is working with youths in the classroom and out on the sports fields.

One fun fact about me: I love board sports — snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding and surfing.

Favorite student moment (so far): Seeing that “aha” moment and how appreciative and happy the student is.

Why I chose to be a teacher: I have a passion to help students achieve and be successful.

Goal for this school year: To instill the love I have for math into my students and to help them be successful in their math knowledge.

One fun fact about me: I formerly raced four-wheelers.

Favorite student moment (so far): Connecting with my first-graders during student teaching, both in and out of the classroom.

Why I chose to be a teacher: I’ve always known I wanted to be an educator. I love making a difference in the lives of children.

Goal for this school year: To engage and excite my kindergartners about school and the world around them.

One fun fact about me: I was published in a Rosie O’Donnell book at age 7!

Most recent teaching job: George Washington Academy in Casablanca, Morocco

Favorite book: “The Poisonwood Bible”

Favorite movie: “Forrest Gump”

Favorite student moment (so far): A child that struggled with reading the first half the year came to me with a new book he had purchased, grinning from ear to ear, and said, “Mrs. Lindstrom, I love to read now! Thank you!” As a classroom teacher, my students feel like my own children, so his telling me this right before Mother’s Day was very touching to me.

Why I chose to be a teacher: I love art and children of all ages.

Goal for this school year: To do the best job I can do and positively touch my students’ lives.
