— Isabel Suppe has quite a story to tell. She fell 1,100 feet from a mountain range in the Andes and wrote a book called “Starry Night” that highlights the tragic adventure in which she lost a good friend.

“It took two days and two nights before a helicopter came,” she said. “They thought they were picking up two bodies — mine and Peter’s. He unfortunately didn’t make it through the second night.”

Yet, Suppe still was alive when help arrived and had sustained several severe injuries, including a compound fracture to her ankle.

She visited Downtown Books in Craig at Tuesday evening to share her tale and a slideshow of the tragic event.

Craig Mayor Terry Carwile, who owns Downtown Books, said that he was excited to have her speak. He can relate to her story as he lost his wife on a rafting trip.

Suppe “has an amazing story, and a lot of it resonates with me personally,” he said. “To be out on an adventure and something goes wrong where rescue is not possible and to lose someone on the trip” is very difficult.

To rebuild muscles in her wounded ankle — she had 14 surgeries — she’s riding her bike from Washington to Boulder and briefly stopping in Craig and Steamboat Springs to promote her book.
