— The Moffat County High School track and field team impressed as the only 3A team at the Warrior Wild West Invitational hosted by Grand Junction Central on Friday at Colorado Mesa University, the team’s first meet in nearly three weeks.

On the strength of strong sprinting results, the girls team took second place with 74 points, and the boys were fourth, scoring 56.

Despite less competition than typical (five schools competed at the Warrior), the level still was high. The Bulldogs faced three 5A schools from Grand Junction and 4A Palisade.

The girls side was highlighted by dominant sprinting. Kayla Pinnt won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and was a part of the second-place 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Lauren Samuelson won the 400-meter run by 0.09 seconds and also was part of the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, which both finished second.

Ashlee Griffiths was third in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and was a part of Moffat County’s runner-up sprint medley relay. Freshman Ary Shaffer set a personal best in the long jump, leaping 15 feet, 1.75 inches and taking second place.

Eryn Leonard represented the distance runners, taking second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:53.

For the boys team, strong individual and relay performances also were strewn throughout the day.

Kelley Campbell was second in the 100 and 200 and was a part of Moffat County’s first-place 4x100 relay, along with Erik Silva, Bryant Cox and Alan Flores. Jarrett Johnson broke five minutes in the 1,600, taking third in 4:55.

Ryder Seely was second in the 110 hurdles, clocking a 17.09. That time is the 16th best in 3A this season, giving Seely the final spot for the moment at the state meet.

In the field events, the Moffat County boys scored big points, getting a 1-2 finish from Miguel Cruz and Tyler Davis in the high jump. The sophomores jumped 5 feet, 6 inches and 5-4, respectively.

Matt Hamilton won the boys triple jump by nearly two feet, going 41-4 without any wind.

The teams return to action Friday the Phil Wertman Invitational, also at Colorado Mesa University, hosted by Fruita Monument.
