Horizons' Pick-a-dish Fundraiser successful in first year

— Melinda Orr delicately placed tortilla strips in her chicken tortilla soup, arranging them just so, knowing presentation is a big part of a winning dish.

Horizons Specialized Services client Melinda Orr teamed up with Layle Dees, of The Memorial Hospital’s Mountain Cafe, to create a winning dish, taking first place in the judge’s choice category during Horizons' inaugural Pick-a-dish Fundraiser on Thursday night.

“It was a great experience,” Orr said. “I enjoyed working with Layle.”

Horizons is a group that works in partnership with families and communities to expand opportunities for individuals with, or at risk of, developmental disabilities.

Eight clients paired up with eight restaurants to create dishes for attendees to sample throughout the evening and then vote with dollar bills.

The event featured live music by Dave & Christina and door prizes. Organizers had to add tables because so many people attended.

Jan Kaminski, a longtime supporter and former board member of Horizons, said he thought the event was absolutely wonderful and loved the fact that so many employers employ Horizons clients.

Former board member and Craig resident Mary Jane Horrocks added that Craig was a very caring and compassionate community.

“This event is one of a kind. We hope we can continue it,” Horrocks said. “The community definitely jumped out and said we support you.”

Second place in the judge’s choice category was Cool Water Grille, with Bill Mason, Sharon Martinez and Dennis and Becky Mason.

Third place was Gino’s Neighborhood Pizzeria & Grill with Bobby Holmberg, Fernando and Justin.

The people’s choice award first place winner was Castle Ranch at the Holiday Inn with Jamie Ogden, Shane McMillan and Tony.

Second place was J.W. Snacks with Mike Adams and Jake.

Third place was Double Barrel Steakhouse with Jeremy Gohr, Pat Roberts and Cameron Whiteman.

Other teams included Jason Latham, Sharla and Jessica, from Brother’s Custom Processing, and Janalee Nugent and Stephanie, from Carelli’s Pizzeria & Pasta.

All together, the people’s choice award raised $452.

Jamie Kaminski, a client at Horizons in Steamboat, helped with the door prizes. Kaminski put it simply when asked why it was important for people to attend events like the Horizons fundraiser.

“To help people.”
