Rig Count for Sept. 22

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 60 rigs online — 2 less than Sept. 14, and 17 less than Sept. 23, 2011.
• Wyoming has 49 rigs online — the same as Sept. 14, but 3 less than Sept. 23, 2011.
• The U.S. has 1,859 rigs online — 5 less than Sept. 14, and 132 less than Sept. 23, 2011.
Of those rigs:
— 1,787 are working on land, 19 in inland waters, and 53 offshore.
— 1,402 are drilling for oil, 454 for natural gas.
— 202 wells are directional, 1,149 are horizontal, and 508 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed down $6.33 from a week ago at $91.98 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed down $6.75 from a week ago at $79.10 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed down $6.75 from a week ago at $78.63 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed down $6.44 from a week ago at $78.87 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down 28 cents from a week ago at $2.76 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
