The Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District’s Center Stage Youth Theatrical Group is performing the musical “Seussical Jr.” this Friday and Saturday at the Meeker High School Auditorium, 500 School St.

Director Laurie Zellers said 43 youths participated who ranged in age from first to seventh grade, with some high school students helping out on the technical crew.

“Seussical Jr.” is comprised of characters and stories from a wide variety of Dr. Seuss's books.

Main character Horton is played by Christopher Strate, and the Cat in the Hat is played by Elissa Quinteros.

Zellers said auditions were held in August, and they began rehearsing in September.

Normally rehearsing three times a week, Zellers said the actors have been rehearsing every day this week, leading up to their first performance at 6 p.m. Friday night. There will be a second performance at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s been really exciting this year number one, because more boys decided to come out, and number two, to see the progress of the kids who have been with us a few years now,” Zellers said.

The group has been performing for two years, with previous plays including Annie Jr. and Disney’s Cinderella.

“I’m very very pleased with our progress,” Zellers said. “The kids have just soaked it up. They’re like sponges.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Meeker Recreation Center for $4 or at the door for $5 on performance days.

For more information call the Meeker Recreation Center at (9700 878-3403.

All patrons are asked to attend the play dressed in costume as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. There will be an opportunity after the show to take photo with cast members and set pieces.

“It’s not your traditional musicals like some of the Disney ones,” Zellers said. “It was a great experience bringing it to life. It was very rewarding. The kids are amazing. When they want to do it, they have it in them, it’s amazing to watch.”
