Dr. Joel Miller’s office may be closed indefinitely, according to a note posted on the entrance to High Country Medical at 535 Yampa Ave.
The note reads:
“They win! Police, sheriff, state and especially the feds decided for you that you don't need me in Craig. Never any charges, just shut me down. Sorry.” — Joel Miller, D.O.
Monday’s note contradicted information released Friday on the Support Dr. Joel Miller Facebook page.
According to that page Miller Monday was expected to re-open High Country Medical in a limited capacity.
Though Miller was expected to begin seeing patients, it was going to be on a cash-only basis, according to the Facebook page.
Miller also was not going to be writing narcotics prescriptions until further notice, the Facebook page stated.
But High Country Medical was dark Monday and the note marks the most recent development in what has been a trying year for Miller.
In April the U.S. Department of Justice seized an undisclosed number of Miller’s patient files as part of an ongoing investigation of the local doctor.
Then in July Miller was arrested at his Hayden home on suspicion of obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.
When the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners learned about Miller’s arrest, they brought him to Denver for a hearing and suspended his license pending an independent evaluation to investigate an alleged alcohol abuse problem.
Miller initially declined to undergo that evaluation.
But the CBME vacated the suspension in September saying Miller, through his legal counsel, would comply with the recommendation of the Colorado Physician Health Program to seek an out of state medical assessment.
Attempts to reach Dr. Miller for comment have been unsuccessful.
Jeffrey Dorschner, public affairs officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Colorado, declined to comment Monday saying it is against Department of Justice policy to discuss the status of an ongoing investigation.
The Craig Daily Press will continue to monitor the story and provide updates as they become available.
