Kaitlyn Shrode, a Craig resident, was part of a tournament-winning select hockey team from Colorado last weekend.

Shrode,13, playing for the Tier II Rock Stars of the Mountain States Girls Hockey League, helped her team to a 4-1 weekend at the Western Regional Girls Silver Stick tournament, culminating in a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Selects to take the championship at the Ice Centre at the Promenade in Westminster.

The Rock Stars U14 team lost its first game, but came back strong to win the tournament and the title of western regional champions. Now they will have the chance to play in the International Finals in February, in Ontario, Canada.

Shrode is also a member of the Craig “Bantams” hockey team in the Colorado Competitive Youth Hockey League. That team is composed of mostly boys, however. She said she has enjoyed her first experience on an all girls team.

"The tournament was a lot of fun, it was cool to win," she said. "It's my first year being on a real girls team and (her teammates) accepted me right from the start. It's just been really fun."

Bowling leagues in Craig pass week 10

With 10 weeks of the bowling season now gone, some teams have lengthened their leads, while other standings have tightened.

As of Nov. 10, the teams from Thunder Rolls and Mr. B’s have continued bowling well and separated themselves from the pack. Thunder Rolls leads at 34-6 in points, while Mr. B’s sits at 32-8, five games ahead of third place Grants.

The Wednesday night Northwest Men’s League is still a muddled mess at the top. Just five points separate first place Country Living Realty (25-11) from eighth place XXX Bowlers/Dschaak (20-16). Craig Physical Therapy (24-12) and Bowling for Beer (23-13) are nipping at the top spot’s heels.

In Thursday night Premier Mixed Doubles, team Misfits has come back to the pack. Sporting a seven point lead two weeks ago, the Misfits (27-13) are now in second place to Has Been Gonna B (28-12).

Spoilers and Pin Heads are not far behind, at 24-16 and 23.5-16.5, respectively.

The Friday Night Mixed Nuts league has seen two teams grab a bit of separation. Pick up Sticks and Sandbaggers lead the way at 30-10 and 29-11, respectively, while Just 2 Quicks (26-14), Bi-Polar Rollers (26-14) and RM Elect/Dry Creek (24-16) are close behind.

Winter lifeguard training courses coming up

Registration for a lifeguard training course during the winter break is open.

Craig Parks and Recreation has aquatic programs year-round, and is in need of lifeguards even during the winter and spring. The class is for teenagers and adults above the age of 15.

Participants must pass a swim test before being allowed to take the lifeguard course, which will take place over the school’s winter break.

The swim test will be Dec. 12 from 7-8 p.m., which therefore doubles as the last day to sign up for lifeguard training.

There is a registration fee of $125. All those interested must call Parks and Rec at 826-2017 to register.

Registration open for Trailbusters 2013

Registration is now available for the 2013 Trailbusters skiing and snowboarding beginner courses.

Local youth ages 6 to 15 can sign up from now through Jan. 7 to learn how to ski or snowboard. Trailbusters will travel to Steamboat Springs for five Saturdays starting Jan. 19 (excluding Feb. 16). Participants will need to provide their own equipment, whether it is bringing along skis or renting them.

The ski and snowboard lessons cost $250, with an additional $45 covering the five bus trips to Steamboat. A $31 lift ticket also will need to be purchased for each week.
