Jerry Rankin: Baxter is the right choice

To the editor:

Jo Ann Baxter of Craig in Moffat County actually is the better choice to represent the diverse population of Colorado HD 57.

Bob Rankin, successful electrical engineer, former corporate executive of broad experience, has endorsements from an impressive array of well-heeled business, commercial, and professional backers.

Rankin’s emphatically conservative political outlook for economic development and job creation in northwestern Colorado, makes him seem like the favorite in these parts. He’s a successful businessman; he thinks like one.

His answers to economic questions resonate with the majority of the Republican base up here.

Now, Dr. Baxter’s thinking bears assessment of her candidacy.

Teaching high school government as well as parenting for nearly 30 of the 39 years in the county, Baxter became broadly acquainted in the small town setting.

Remaining a scholar herself, she earned an MA and the PhD, while rearing her family and teaching. Meanwhile, somehow, the lifelong Democrat made peace with the majority of Republicans, and became a respected member of the community.

I think it was by cultivating “mutual accommodation,” the bargaining, the give-and-take required in civil political discourse.

Anyway, I hear one now sees Baxter yard signs around Craig. (See sources cited above for biographical clues to Jo Ann’s political preparedness to be a State Representative. Space precludes it here.) Anyway. . .

Baxter is already thinking in policy terms. She pledged to “govern from the center,” since popular government requires mutual cooperation among competing interests to function. She is thinking systematically. She is already relating Education, Health Care, Tourism, Water, and Transportation to economic development, as well as hydrocarbon production.

These categories relate to ranching, farming, fishing, hunting among pursuits of our diverse citizenry in the local economy.

Recognizing the kind of thought Jo Ann has put into this already, is what makes me hope you still have a vote to cast for her.

Sincerely,

Jerry Rankin (no relation)
