Burger eatery builds awareness

In a location that has seen several food entrepreneurs come and go, the latest tenant is still cooking up a storm after the rocky first few months.

Since opening in January, The Burger Shack has made its mark on the local restaurant scene.

Located within Mathers Club, 420 Yampa Ave., the small grilling operation features a menu that includes hot dogs, chicken sandwiches and of course, hamburgers, in addition to a wide selection of appetizers.

Owner Michelle Reed said she focuses on providing patrons of the establishment with something that would go well with a drink.

“Basically we serve a lot of good bar food,” she said. “There are some folks who just want to eat in a restaurant not a bar because the atmosphere is different, but we do have a good crowd. It’s a plus all the way around because it gives people more options and eating can slow down the alcohol in their bodies.”

Mathers has dabbled in serving food in the past.

Besides offering a bar and grill setup of its own, the business recently rented space to late-night takeout provider Rhino’s Deli.

“The guy who ran Rhino’s just kind of walked away one day so we replaced him,” Reed said.

Reed said going into a kitchen where more than one business fell apart was a little intimidating, but finding customers hasn’t been too hard.

“We’ve really started to get the word out to people who can’t really get away from their businesses so they love having a ‘to-go’ option,” she said. “We deliver, too, and a lot of the hotels have started taking our menus.”

Reed said she doesn’t want to bite off more than she can chew by doing too much, though she may expand the menu before long.

“I think it would be really great to have something like a steak sandwich,” she said.

Hours of operation for The Burger Shack are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for lunch.

For dinner, the hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Delivery is available for an extra fee.

Equipment supplier moves to mall location

Since relocating to a more centralized spot less than a month ago, the Craig branch of industrial supplier Fastenal has already seen the benefits.

Originally stationed on First Street, the store is now located in the east wing of the Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way, first opening in mid-April.

Sales representative Nick Bulla said the move has helped increase the amount of casual customers.

“We’ve definitely gotten a lot more walk-ins,” he said.

Though much of Fastenal’s business is done online or over the phone, the physical location allows a firsthand look at much of their inventory, though only a fraction of what’s on the shelves makes up their total wares.

“We have access to over 500,000 products in one to two days,” Bulla said.

Bulla said the mall space is considerably smaller — by 2,800 square feet — than the old building, but it suits the company's needs better.

“We were basically just paying for empty space, and everything here is everything that was in the other shop and we still have plenty of room,” he said.

Bulla said the space is more economically sound, allowing employees to worry less about bills and more time with customers inside or outside the shop.

The Craig Fastenal deals heavily in safety equipment for mining companies and other industries in need of heavy-duty gear.

A Fastenal vending machine, which gives clients quick access to day-to-day use of equipment and only requires occasional refilling, is a feature the company is trying to push.

“Mines, they use them for stuff like headlights, flashlights, batteries, gloves, anything consumable, and it cuts costs,” Bulla said. “We have two machines set up at the power plant in Hayden, and we have a guy coming up to work on getting them in more places.”
