Moffat County High School students were putting the finishing touches Monday on a concert to wrap up the school year.

“I’ve Got the Music in Me” is slated for 7 p.m. tonight in the MCHS auditorium, 900 Finley Lane.

Admission is free and concessions will be sold at the performance. The concert’s title isn’t simply a figure of speech for MCHS choir student Shilo Simpson, 18.

“I was dancing to it in my car this morning,” she said, laughing.

Her reaction fits with the production’s theme.

“The spring concert is much more pop-oriented,” said Heather Dahlberg, MCHS theater and choir teacher.

The annual musical production includes choirs from MCHS and Craig Middle School and draws heavily from jazz, ’70s popular music and Broadway tunes, Dahlberg said.

However audiences can expect to hear pieces from the 1500s, a period that set the stage for modern finger-snapping tunes.

“It’s to kind of show how music started,” Dahlberg said. “The Renaissance, meaning ‘new birth’ in music, was kind of where your modern notation started to emerge, and the idea is that without Renaissance music … we would not have the pop music, the jazz music (and) the Broadway music of today,” she said.

“I’ve Got the Music in Me” won’t be the last time some student singers take the stage. A 7 p.m. concert on May 15, also at the auditorium, will feature MCHS jazz band and CenterStage choir students performing a medley from “Guys and Dolls,” to preview the school’s 2012 musical.

Still, as the last choir-only concert of the school year, Tuesday’s production will be bittersweet for Simpson, a MCHS senior who has performed in choir since elementary school.

“It’s saddening to think I’ve committed so many years … (and) now it’s goodbye,” she said.
