Caring for an aging parent and young child share at least one similarity: They’re both time- and energy-intensive undertakings.

“When you are the caregiver for somebody, that’s a huge responsibility,” said Karen Burley, director of The Haven, an assisted living center in Hayden.

But while most parents get a much-needed reprieve from round-the-clock care when their children go to school, adults who care for an elderly loved one have no such respite.

This month, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is gauging interest in adult care and activity programs at The Haven designed to take some of the weight off caregivers’ shoulders.

The programs are ongoing, and the interest they garner this month will determine if the VNA will maintain, change or discontinue them, Burley said.

The next session takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at The Haven, 300 S. Shelton Lane, in Hayden. Other sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, and March 16, 20 and 27.

The program costs $60 per day and includes lunch and a range of activities from games to simple exercise.

Participants also receive a wellness check at every session, providing caregivers “a snapshot of how the loved one is doing,” Burley said.

Another program, which costs $50 per day, is tailored specifically to adults with memory care needs, including those with dementia. These sessions take place from noon to 4 p.m. March 23 and 30 at The Haven.

Both programs include free transportation to and from Hayden and are designed with caregivers’ needs in mind.

“We know there are people in our communities who are caregivers, and that’s great that they’re taking care of their loved ones,” Burley said. “… But we know that they need a break.

“We’re trying to design a program that will help them take a break, which in turn, makes them better caregivers.”

A grant offered through the Caregiver Support Program can cover the cost of these and other kinds of respite care programs for residents in Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco counties, program coordinator Nancy McStay said.

“It’s wonderful that The Haven is providing this service,” she said. “… It has the potential to go a long ways.”

For more information about the grant, call McStay at 824-5646 or toll-free at 877-963-8731.

Caregivers who are interested in the programs at The Haven must register no later than 3 p.m. on the Friday the week before.
