2012 market beef animals weighed and tagged
Fifty-six market beef animals were weighed in and tagged during Moffat County’s 4-H/FFA Market Beef Weigh-In and Tagging on Feb. 5 at the Moffat County Fairgrounds.
That’s an increase of 16 from 2011’s 40 market beef animals.
Jackie Goodnow, of Colorado State University Extension, suggested a reason for the increase in 4-H/FFA Market Beef this year.
“We have several members this year, plus siblings of older members who are now eligible for 4-H,” she said.
The annual weigh-in and tagging is mandatory for 4-H and FFA members to be able to show and sell their market beef animals during the Moffat County Fair.
The tagging is necessary to identify the animals that will be fed during the 2012 year, and the weigh-in numbers are used to figure weight-of-gain at fair time. Weigh-in and tagging is also the time 4-H/FFA members nominate animals they intend to show at the state fair.
The weigh-in and tagging took place from 8:30 a.m. to noon, when the scales closed. This year, there was no Mid-Winter Feeder Calf Show that is usually held in conjunction with the event.
During the weigh-in and tagging, it was required that all animals be haltered and led onto the scales or the animals were not weighed. Also, no junior 4-H/FFA member was allowed to weigh-in or have his/her name on more than three market animals per specie for the county fair.
It was required that the scrotums of the steers be dried up with obviously no viable testicular tissue present before arriving at the initial mandatory weigh-in or the members were not allowed to have their animals weighed-in and thus not to be shown or sold during county fair.
Members with intentions of showing their market beef animals at the state fair (state fair nominations) were required to have these animals nose-printed during the weigh-in and tagging. This was done free for up to two animals; additional animals were charged $5 per head. State fair only market beef animals were also tagged and nose-printed at the event.
Each state fair exhibitor is required to have a premises ID number which is placed on their market beef animal’s nose print card. Members obtained their ID numbers before weigh-in and tagging.
All in all, it was a busy morning for 4-H/FFA members and people who were there to help.
Brad Ocker, Moffat County Brand Inspector, was there to process paperwork. C.J. Mucklow, Northwestern Colorado regional director of CSU Extension, helped with nose printing.
