Letter: Obamacare beginning of socialized medicine

To the editor:
As of mid-morning on Thursday June 28, I now no longer recognize the United States of America.
In a 5-4 decision the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that socialized medicine is now a tax and therefore is legal. Every citizen must buy this product or pay a fine.
This will kill any hope that we might have had for an economic recovery.
Small businesses are the engines that drive our economy. The only certainty that they now have is that hiring another employee will cost them even more money at a time when things are already tight.
Economists say that the key small businesses are looking for in hiring and expanding is some sense of certainty. As of Thursday we now have even less certainty.
The real jobless rate is 14.8 percent and 1 in 7 Americans are on food stamps. Last year $3 million in food stamps went out to Moffat County residents.
Rather that try to write a long diatribe on Obamacare, let me just say this: We have lost a key freedom.

I think the first thing that needs to be addressed about socialized medicine is the definition of the term. Many seem to think that the sectarian moniker “Obamacare” is in fact socialism, and furthermore believe the liberals are overrunning the American way. Well, let us clarify a few things.
Socialized medicine, is a government run and government subsidized health care system. If you didn’t already know the US has had a government run and government subsidized health care system for quite some time, starting circa 1920. Our veterans, by definition, are stuck in a socialized medical system, an idea sparked by Abraham Lincoln in 1865. VA hospitals are government controlled, and funded.
The affordable care Act, is not the first act of its kind. It has been noted the FDR, at points in his presidency, was either going to be the last president or the greatest president. FDR started the New Deal as a way to pull America out of the Great Depression. FDR’s New Deal was supported by socialism, using social welfare to help the needy. Prior to this, needy assistance was left up to the States and for the most part religion. The Great Depression showed that the states and clergy could help some of the needy, but like anything in capitalism you need capital. When the States are broke and the churches are broke, who is left to help and protect the needy? (a fundamental outlined in the Preamble of the Constitution- “promote the general welfare”)
Prior to Obamacare, there are several individual mandates which were already in place. If you drive a car you have to have insurance. If you employee a certain number of people, you pay workers compensation insurance. If you work you pay for Medicaid, and Medicare. In Moffat County you even subsidize TMH (1.7 million). This is not an Obama idea, nor is it a new American era. Jefferson v. Hamilton happened at a point of American History when America was far more revoltist and unstable. The New Deal was instated in era of depression unemployment and hardship.

Keynesian economics doesn't work. FDR protracted the Great Depression.
The Great Society of LBJ didn't win the war on poverty. But promises were made that we cannot pay now.
Businesses will not be adding employees for quite some time now.
BTW…. WTF thanks for being polite and having a rational discusssion.

Lets be honest,the citizens of this country have not enjoyed true freedom for a long time. And the list of things that government says we need or must have grows every day. It matters not if it is a Democratic administration or a Republican administration. Both parties love to strip away freedom and spend money. The difference is where the money is spent. Democrats spend money on social programs and Republicans give money to other countries,military complex, expensive wars poorly thought out and new departments like Homeland Security.

You are absolutely correct about working locally as the priority. Can you come to a TMH BOT meeting and discuss areas that you believe that the board should address or address differently? Is it something that we (you, staff and the board) can talk about in a public setting? Get the ball rolling and call Don Myers or George Rohrich.

Thanks for the invite, but I've already been to a few TMH Board meetings and have witnessed multiple people voice concerns to both George and members of the board. Nothing has changed. In fact, things seem to be worsening (continued loss of good employees leading to decreased quality of care, declining community trust, wasted tax dollars, etc.)
The board knows what they need to do without being told yet again. Question is, will they do it?
