Briefs for June 30: July Fourth picnic slated at Veterans Memorial Park

A Fourth of July picnic is scheduled to take place Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The event is free and open to the public and begins around 1 p.m.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, baked beans, watermelon and beverages will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring a dessert.

The event also includes children’s games and live entertainment.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary members are seeking volunteers to help with games and serve food.

Variety Show set for Friday

A monthly variety show is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Holiday Inn of Craig, 300 S. Colorado Highway 13.

Medicare counseling Tuesday in Craig

Medicare consultations take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in room 106 of Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Bell Tower Building, 50 College Drive.

Betsy Packer, with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, is available the first and third Tuesdays of every month to offer one-on-one help to residents with Medicare and their families.

The consultations are free and confidential, and they are open to residents who receive Medicare, which is for people 65 and older, or who will be receiving Medicare services in the near future.

Meeker Range Call begins Tuesday

The Meeker Range Call takes place Tuesday through July 8 in various locations around Meeker.

An art reception takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday in downtown Meeker, followed by an outdoor movie at dark in Paintbrush Park.

Wednesday’s events include a Run for Your Life 5K walk/run that begins at 7:30 a.m. in downtown Meeker, a parade at 10 a.m. and barbecue to follow, and an art reception with free live music.

A mobile FMX freestyle motorcycle show also takes place Wednesday at 4 p.m., followed by a free concert by Gwen Sebastian at 7 p.m. and the Meeker pageant at dusk, all of which take place at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds, 779 Sulphur Creek Road.

The event continues Thursday in downtown Meeker with events including a barbecue showdown and live music at 5 p.m. Friday’s events include a sheepdog exhibit at 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds and a barn dance.

Mosquito treatment in Craig

Aerial treatment for adult mosquitoes will take place in the evenings or early mornings Tuesday through Friday.

Treatments are limited to recreational areas along the Yampa River corridor.

Social Services to distribute food supplements

The Moffat County Department of Social Services will distribute U.S. Department of Agriculture food supplements from 9 to 11 a.m. July 17 in Craig at 595 Breeze St. Participants must use the northeast alley entrance.

Other distributions are scheduled for 9 to 9:30 a.m. July 25 at the Maybell Community Center and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 25 at the Social Services office in Dinosaur, 330 Stegosaurus Freeway. “All households that receive food supplement must be recertified at the first of each year,” the agency reported in a news release. “Verification includes proof of the household's gross monthly income, current address and picture I.D.” For more information, call Meghan Rudd at 824-8282, extension 11.
