Craig Fire Board hosting special meeting tonight

Willems: Board members to move forward with purchase of training tower kit

If you go…

What: Craig Rural Fire Protection District Board meeting

When: 6 p.m. tonight

Where: Craig fire station, 419 Yampa Ave.

The Craig Rural Fire Protection District Board is scheduled to host a special meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the fire station, 419 Yampa Ave., to approve a contract for the purchase of a fire training tower kit.

The meeting is open to the public.

Last month, the fire board approved purchasing the kit for $470,000 from WHP Trainingtowers contingent upon a land transfer agreement between Colorado Northwestern Community College and the fire district.

But, the CNCC Board did not move forward with the land transaction. The land would have been used for the training tower, or the first phase of a second station.

Byron Willems, fire board president, said board members tonight must offer and approve a new motion to purchase the training tower kit.

Now that the CNCC land is off the table, the training tower is slated for construction at the fire board’s alternate site on Industrial Avenue near Kmart.

The WHP Trainingtowers contract is the only item on tonight’s special meeting agenda and fire officials expect the motion to pass with little discussion, Willems said.

Great job, now it is in the middle of town, does any thinking go into this at all? There has to be some sort of law against this as it is now even closer to those who opposed it in the first place. Where are all the "wind blows from the south right into the hospital" people now? If your theory about the wind is right, now it will blow it all right into the heart of town. At least it would have dissipated some before reaching town when it was going to be put up on the hill, now it is right there, much closer for all those who some were so worried about having to breathe the smoke. Any comment on this new location at all, anyone??? Sorry guys, I supported you before, now all you are doing is slapping the public in the face because you didn't get your way. Even though I am all for whatever it takes to have a well functioning department, I cannot support this new venture that is worse than the first one.

Dave, If you follow this link,
This is Rawlins Wy. fire training building. I think it is close to what is proposed for Craig. If you click on the Google map and go to street view you can see how their building is in the middle of a residential area. Looks like about 10 multi story apartments right across the street and numerous houses and a trailer park across the street on three sides. Now, I also would like to see CRFPD be able to build somewhere else but in my opinion I don't see many problems with the proposed location. I guess we will all wait and see. As for wind.... We all know Rawlins never gets any wind.

OK, thanks Doug. However, (depending on the age of the map) this facility looks to be built on the SE portion of the main bulk of the town. Prevailing winds normally blow from the west, which would only affect the trailer park next to it. I live a block from where this will be built, which is not my issue, and if the Craig tower was built SE of Craig, as it appears to be in Rawlins, perfect. If these winds blow from the south, as many of our local forum weather experts claim they do, this will affect a large part of town, not just one building. Everyone was so worried about the hospital, why are they not worried about the town now? That is my issue and I think two things have happened: 1. Those not complaining now have it far enough away from them, there is nothing left to whine about. 2. This is, in my opinion, a slap in the face kind of a move because they didn't get what they wanted, free land(I know, I know, not free, but free to them). I would not think this way if the board would move this thing out of town, where it originally belonged in the first place. Then I would support it 100%. It was fine where it was going, sorry you all didn't get that location but c'mon, use some common sense here. Tell me Doug, why not use some of the money, buy an acre or two a couple miles from town, east preferably, and build it there? Why MUST this tower be built in town? I don't know what land goes for but whats an extra 50k now? I am just trying to understand things, not argue.

Dave, I don't know why the board is not looking at other land. I don't think there has been a meeting since the college deal failed. That is a good question. Maybe they still will. I guess you will just have to call a board member and ask or attend a meeting and ask "why". I think east of Ranney and South of First St. is what I would call and ideal place. I know I have visited about 20 fire training facilitys around the country and there are lots of them in residentual areas.
