Many businesses have come and gone from Centennial Mall in recent years, but now under new operating guidelines, some of them may be finding a more permanent home.
Since stepping into the position of leasing and property manager for the mall, 1111 W. Victory Way, Eric Tegl has tried to bring out the best the mall has to offer.
Tegl took over in December 2011.
“It’s definitely a whole new attitude,” Tegl said. “Aesthetically, it’s been painted, all the landscaping’s cleaned up, and a lot of other things are still going to be done, like improving signage and that big sign out by the highway will replaced.”
Tegl added he hopes to see a greater flow of tenants taking available spaces within the complex, joining recent additions like the Moffat County Tourism Association office space and Fastenal, among others.
“We really want the community to know that there’s a lot of flexibility with the leasing space and rates and it’s a really great spot,” he said. “All indications are we’ll be having a couple great new tenants coming in soon, so I’m not sure how many vacancies there will be soon.”
A Steamboat Springs resident and business manager, Tegl said he prefers to help small local businesses get their start.
“I like to be able to give new businesses kind of a chance to grow with an inexpensive rate and if they do well we end up with a tenant and if not, there’s really nothing lost,” he said. “That’s a way of managing that hasn’t really been done there before, but that’s my philosophy.”

Fashion retailer prepares for relocation
While the mall focuses on bringing in new businesses, one of its existing ones is readying for a new site.
Maurices, a women’s clothing and accessories store, will be packing up and moving to new property development, the Tebo Center, near Walmart, later this summer.
Manager Andrea Medina said the shop staff plans to open at the new location in early August.
“Maurices has a great team that will help us move, and they’ve given me a lot of books to prepare for it,” Medina said. “All the moves and remodels they’ve done have been really successful.”
Medina said regular customers have already been inquiring about the new business space, which features about an extra 1,000-square-feet compared to the space at the mall.
“It’s going to be bigger and brand new and who doesn’t like that?” she said. “It’s still Maurices, though, and I think the entire community is pretty excited about it. We’ll probably be doing a grand re-opening, and we’ll get the fliers and coupons out for that.”
Medina said she looks forward to the challenge of the new building in what is still a relatively new job for her.
She has been with the business for more than a year, becoming an interim manager for Maurices starting in January, receiving the official promotion to store manager in May.
“I have passion for customers and people and the community and I really think that will drive us so we can bring the best service for people here,” she said.
