Retired priest appears in court on sex charges

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A retired Roman Catholic priest has been formally charged with sexually assaulting a child.

The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/L1cPPn ) Charles Robert Manning appeared in court in Colorado Springs on Thursday. He is charged with three counts of sex assault on a child by one in a position of trust, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and two counts of sexual exploitation of children.

Details of the allegations haven't been disclosed. Lawyers for both sides declined to comment outside the courtroom.

Manning, formerly of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, was placed on leave in January. He retired a month later. His attorney Richard Bednarski says Manning now lives in a home for retired priests in suburban St. Louis.

Manning is free on $10,000 bond.
