Sports Briefs for July 18, 2012: Lifeguard training begins next week

Craig Parks and Recreation will have lifeguard training classes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m August 7-10.

Anyone wishing to be a lifeguard will have to take the course and pass a swimming test before being allowed into the training.

The pre-test swimming course is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Craig Swimming Complex, 605 Washington St. Tuesday is also the final day to register for the course.

The cost is $100.

Participants must be at least 15-years-old and strong enough swimmers to complete a 300-meter swim and tread water for a minute. The course will teach CPR, first aid and rescue skills, among others.

Participants can register online at the City of Craig website.

Parks and Rec registration deadlines today

Today is the final day registrations for tackle football and Pom Pom Pups Cheerleading will be accepted by Craig Parks and Recreation.

The tackle football league is available for children in third through sixth grade, and will involve practices and games three days per week. The season begins in August.

Registration costs $50.

Pom Pom Pups is a cheerleading class for children in first through fifth grades. It will start with basic clapping techniques and teach more advanced cheers as well.

Pom Pom Pups will also have cheering opportunities starting in August at Doak Walker football games.

Practice will begin in mid-July, and a $30 fee is required for a cheer shirt and pom poms. For more information, call 826-2004.

The deadline to register for both is Wednesday.

MCHS Volleyball camp accepting registration

Moffat County High School volleyball coach Sandy Camilletti will lead a volleyball camp at the high school for seventh- and eighth-grade girls interested in the sport.

The camp will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 24 through 26 and will focus on teaching campers fundamentals and individual skills.

Registration forms can be picked up at Mountain West Insurance, 100 E. Victory Way. The fee for the three-day camp is $20.

Registration will close Friday. Forms must be returned to Camilletti at Mountain West.

Soccer tourney for all ages set for late August

Bill Sawer will host the Beach Soccer Tournament Sunday, July 22, at Sawer’s Soccer Park, 2303 W. First St.

The one-day tournament will begin at 1 p.m. and play will continue until darkness falls. It is for players of all ages and skill levels.

Participants won’t need soccer cleats, as the games will be played on sand.

There is no fee to play, and Sawer said he expects a low-key event that will allow people to “come out and play until they can’t stand.”
