Jason Kawcak, a 25-year-old Craig resident and Colowyo Coal Company employee, died Saturday in a vehicle crash on Colowyo Mine property in Moffat County.

The crash occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from Colowyo Coal Company, Western Fuels-Colorado, and Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association, Inc.

Lt. KC Hume, of the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, said Craig Fire/Rescue firefighters, an ambulance crew from The Memorial Hospital in Craig, and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

While emergency resources were en route to the site of the crash, they encountered an ambulance crew from Colowyo transporting Kawcak to Craig.

Kawcak was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a preliminary investigation of the accident, Hume said. That investigation has been turned over to Colowyo personnel and investigators with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Ken Anderson, general manager of Western Fuels-Colorado, which owns Colowyo Mine, issued a statement in the news release.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy,” Anderson said. “The safety of our people and operations are our highest priority. We are working closely with public safety authorities to investigate the accident.”

All operations at Colowyo Mine have ceased for the time being, according to the release.
