Moffat County High School graduate accepts internship at Disney World

As Craig residents continue to receive some much-appreciated snow, the cold that accompanies it is less than enjoyable.

Former Craig resident and Moffat County High School graduate Andrew Drake headed for warmer weather the day after Christmas, traveling to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to complete an internship with Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.

Drake attended Sterling College in Sterling, Kan., where he recently received his certification in athletic training. Drake played football there and spent plenty of time in the athletic training room, which led him to switch majors from biology to athletic training.

“Biology gave me a good foundation,” Drake said. Athletic training “was something that really interested me, so I decided I wanted to switch degrees and go a different route.”

Drake said Sterling’s Director of Athletic Training Pete Manely had contact with the lead athletic trainer at Disney Sports and introduced Drake to the internship.

At his internship, Drake will be doing sports coverage for Disney Sports events from Little League to college sports.

The internship runs from Jan. 2 to May 10, and Drake said he’s excited to work on areas he’s identified during self-evaluation throughout the years as well as gain experience for a graduate program in the fall.

Drake said he has applied for a few graduate assistant positions at universities across the country.

“Ultimately, I would like to be an athletic trainer for a school district somewhere and coach high school sports, as well,” Drake said, speaking about his goals for the future.

As for his goals during the internship, Drake said he’s excited to be working on his own.

“I’d like to refine my skills,” Drake said. “I’m really excited to work and be able to cover events by myself and see what I can do. I’ll work on my injury-evaluation skills, decision-making skills and stuff like that.”
