Christmas is over and right around the corner is New Year’s. For many, New Year’s is the party of the year. It’s time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new.
There are many ways to ring in the New Year. Most of us will watch the ball drop with family and friends and others will go out on the town to party it up.
As a single woman, I have been thinking about how I am going to ring in 2013, which got me thinking, why is the pressure to go out on New Year so big compared to any other night?
Could it be that a kiss at midnight is so appealing to many of us or the chance of finding love? As the clock ticks closer and closer, you are on constant search for the perfect pair of lips to lock with when the clock strikes twelve.
With so much riding on this kiss, I wondered about the meaning behind it and why it is perceived as such a big deal. After a little research, I found that Europeans held masked balls to celebrate the New Year and at the stroke of midnight they would remove the masks, which represented evil spirits from the past year, and kiss to symbolize purification of the New Year.
Other cultures believe that the kiss is a symbol of wanting to strengthen relationships and wiping the slate clean.
There are also some superstitions wrapped into this magical kiss. Some believe that if you don’t kiss someone at midnight then you are going to have a lackluster love life in the year to come.
So is there any meaning behind all of this or is a kiss just a kiss?
