Good customer service is attempted by many but only achieved by few.
At the City Market in Craig, Marcus Johnson sets the bar for how good customer service can be.
Johnson, a 48-year-old transplant from Waco, Texas, who has been in Craig for 17 years, is an instantly recognizable figure to City Market regulars in Craig.
Johnson has done two stints at City Market in Craig, the most recent starting up during Memorial Day weekend of this year. But seven months has been more than enough time for him to make his mark on the community once again.
Shop in City Market enough, and Johnson can be seen in every corner of the store, filling a variety of roles.
“I float around,” he said. “I work in the dairy, I work in produce, I work at the bakery, I work at the front end on the register sometimes. I do it all.”
But being a reliable employee is not all he brings to the table. Johnson has developed relationships with many customers, engaging them in conversation whenever possible and always being friendly with shoppers he comes across.
“I try to be a light for people,” he said. “I try to let God’s love just shine through me the best way I can. That’s my ultimate goal here.”
It is that attitude that makes him a valuable employee, store manager Julie Nalty said.
“Marcus is a very passionate person and works very well with our customers,” she said. He does excellent customer service, really cares about what our customers need and want and does a very good job of interacting with all our customers.”
Johnson doesn’t see a reason to be any other way. Since coming to Craig after serving in the Marine Corps from 1983 to 1994 and doing a stint in the first Gulf War, he started traveling the country for work with a friend.
“When I got out of the Marine Corps, a buddy of mine was working on the road doing power plant maintenance,” he said. “We went all around the U.S. and Canada.
"One day they asked if we wanted to Hayden, Colorado. He said it was pretty close to Denver and I thought that was pretty cool. It isn’t really that close of course, but I met my wife here. This is pretty much home.”
Johnson brings an enduring good spirit to the store and infects many customers he comes across with his good spirit. He says it comes naturally.
“Well, I just try to treat people the way I want to be treated,” he said. “Like I say, I just try to respect them and get along with people. I’m honest with people.”
In Johnson, City Market has a model employee, which the company knows is a valuable asset.
“That is one of our principles as far as what our store needs,” Nalty said. “Customer service is our number on priority throughout the company of City Market, King Soopers and Kroger. It’s what we look for in all our associates. He is a prime example of what we need from our associates.”
