Rig Count for Dec. 15, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 58 rigs online — 1 more than Dec. 14, but 22 less than Dec. 16, 2011.
• Wyoming has 49 rigs online — the same as Dec. 14, but 4 less than Dec. 16, 2011.
• The U.S. has 1,799 rigs online — 1 less than Dec. 14, and 220 less than Dec. 16, 2011.
Of those rigs:
— 1,729 are working on land, 21 in inland waters, and 49 offshore.
— 1,381 are drilling for oil, 416 for natural gas.
— 190 wells are directional, 1,105 are horizontal, and 504 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed down 4 cents from a week ago at $85.89 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed down 50 cents from a week ago at $73.10 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed down 50 cents from a week ago at $72.63 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed up $3.63 from a week ago at $74.89 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down 20 cents from a week ago at $3.35 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
