Rig Count for Dec. 8, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 57 rigs online — 1 more than Nov. 30, but 24 less than Dec. 9, 2011.
• Wyoming has 49 rigs online — the same as Nov. 30, but 4 less than Dec. 9, 2011.
• The U.S. has 1,800 rigs online — 11 less than Nov. 30, and 187 less than Dec. 9, 2011.
Of those rigs:
— 1,732 are working on land, 20 in inland waters, and 48 offshore.
— 1,382 are drilling for oil, 417 for natural gas.
— 191 wells are directional, 1,103 are horizontal, and 506 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed down 56 cents from a week ago at $85.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed down $1.75 from a week ago at $73.60 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed down $1.75 from a week ago at $73.13 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed down $3.79 from a week ago at $71.26 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down 15 cents from a week ago at $3.55 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
