InsideOut Sports opened for business Saturday and started out strong.
Offering half-price deals for use of the batting cages and shooting on the archery range to go along with food from the grill, it was a productive first day of business for owner Brad King.
“It started real slow; I opened at nine,” King said Saturday. “I really didn’t get anybody in here till about 11, but we’ve been steady since then.”
King had his baseball and softball batting cages available at the 561 Russell St. business for the morning and early afternoon and took those down to make the archery lanes available for the evening.
He said archery generated more early interest, but the batting cages attracted a crowd even though many local children — King’s target audience with the cage — were out of town.
“A lot of kids are out of town for sports this weekend, but I still had around 20 kids in here for the batting cages,” he said. “It worked out pretty well. We had lots of girls in, which surprised me, but it’s great.”
Hunter Roberts, 14, is a freshman at Moffat County High School. He showed up to use the batting cages and said he's looking forward to keeping sharp while waiting for baseball, his only sport, to get started.
“I was pretty excited,” Hunter said about InsideOut Sports' opening. “It’s going to give me something to do over the winter. I’ll probably use it quite a bit. It’ll be good to keep swinging.”
There still are some kinks to work out in the business, the biggest being the ease of transitioning from one activity to the other. King said it took longer and was more difficult than expected to move the batting cages aside to clear the archery lanes.
“I’ve got to get a couple things figured out a little better,” he said. “I’d like to be able to put (the nets) up and take it down quicker. That will come, though.”
King’s plan for now is to have InsideOut open for batting cages from noon to 9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and for archery Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
