Rig Count for Sept. 1, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Friday, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:
• Colorado has 61 rigs online — the same as Aug. 24, but 14 less than Sept. 2, 2011.
• Wyoming has 52 rigs online — the same as Aug. 24, but 1 less than Sept. 2, 2011.
• The U.S. has 1,894 rigs online — 4 less than Aug. 24, and 74 less than Sept. 2, 2011.
Of those rigs:
— 1,825 are working on land, 18 in inland waters, and 51 offshore.
— 1,419 are drilling for oil, 473 for natural gas.
— 219 wells are directional, 1,149 are horizontal, and 526 are vertical.
As of the close of trading Thursday:
• Crude oil closed down $1.75 from a week ago at $94.52 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed down $1.75 from a week ago at $81.85 a barrel.
• Colorado Western crude oil closed down $1.75 from a week ago at $79.08 a barrel.
• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed down $1.65 from a week ago at $76.62 a barrel.
• Natural gas closed down 5 cents from a week ago at $2.75 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
