Sports Briefs for August 13: A League adult softball tournament begins today

The Craig Parks and Recreation adult softball A League tournament takes place this week.

The tournament runs today through Wednesday with games played at 7:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. at Loudy-Simpson Park.

The A League consists of the first through seventh seeds from the regular season.

Teams playing in the A League tournament are:

• TCB

• ACE/Gino’s

• Vallartas

• Advanced Plumbing/Xcel Energy

• TLC Carpet • Napa/Severson Supply

• Twisted/Peabody

Yampa Valley Golf Course to host night tournament

The Grand Futures Midnight Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sept. 14 at Yampa Valley Golf Course.

The tournament will consist of teams of four, but individuals may sign up and will be put into teams by the start of the tournament.

The cost is $25 per individual or $100 per team.

The tournament is scheduled to begin at dusk.

Grand Futures is accepting donations and prizes.

Yampa Valley Medical Center hosting presentation on concussions

Yampa Valley Medical Center will host a class about concussions as part of its "Taking Care of Me" education initiative.

The class, titled “More than just a bump on the head: Youth Sports & Concussions,” will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at YVMC, 1024 Central Park Dr., in Steamboat Springs.

Doctors and physical therapists will speak at the free program about concussion symptoms, the recovery process, and Colorado concussion legislation.

Craig Sea Sharks close season on high note

The Craig Sea Sharks concluded the summer season at the Colorado Seasonal State meet in Gunnison earlier this month.

The Sea Sharks had nine different swimmers compete in 42 events.

Britta Henderson was third in the 25-yard freestyle in the girls 6-and-under group, while Anna Cooper placed second in both the 25-yard backstroke and butterfly for the 8-and-under girls.

In the 9 and 10 girls, Burke Henderson swam in nine events, placing highest in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard breaststroke at fourth.

Nathan Cooper placed ninth in the 9 and 10 boys 50-yard freestyle.

A trio of 11 and 12 girls participated in several events.

Marisa Hulstine placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, Molly Neton was fourth in the 50- and 100-yard backstroke, and Jaci McDiffett took seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.

Colby Beckett was 10th in the 11 and 12 boys 50-yard freestyle.

Breck Henderson finished 17th in the same race.

Referees for Craig Parks and Recreation football needed

Craig Parks and Recreation is seeking officials for the 2012 tackle football season, which begins in early September.

Starting pay is $22 per game and candidates must be at least 14.

Previous officiating experience is helpful, but not necessary.

Craig Parks and Recreation adult volleyball open for registration

A fall co-ed volleyball league through Craig Parks and Recreation will begin Sept. 17.

Registration for the league is open until Sept. 5. Parks and rec will include two different leagues this year.

A competitive league will play Monday nights and semi-competitive will play Tuesday or Thursday nights.

Those signing up for semi-competitive must be available to play Tuesday or Thursday.

The fee for registration is $125 for a team and $10 per player.
