Sports Briefs for April 28: Sea Sharks to host registration Thursday
Sea Sharks to host registration Thursday
Registration for the Craig Sea Sharks swimming team’s summer program will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Thursday in the cafeteria at Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave.
Open to ages 5 to 18, team swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping, touching the sides or receiving assistance from anyone.
Participants must also have a sense of commitment.
Sea Sharks board member Bonnie Hulstine said she is hoping to bring in swimmers from Craig as well as beyond to exceed last year’s 39 registered swimmers.
“We’ve had some calls from people from Baggs, (Wyo.), and so we’re looking at adding swimmers from there,” she said.
“Hayden and Meeker are also communities without their own team, so this would be open to them, too.”
Coaching this year are Meghan Francone, Anita Reynolds and Heather Vallem.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had three coaches, and we’re very lucky that they’re willing to give up their summer,” Hulstine said.
Swimmers will learn and practice the proper technique for the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, which they will use in competitions throughout the summer.
Registration options include the silver team for $130 or gold team for $230.
Silver team practices twice weekly, while gold team hits the pool five days a week.
Practices begin at 4 p.m. May 21 at the Moffat County High School pool, 900 Finley Lane, and meets will begin in June.

MCHS boys swimming team improves times in Arvada
The Moffat County High School boys varsity swimming team competed Friday and Saturday in the Jeffco Invitational in Arvada.
The Bulldogs placed 18th out of 32 teams in the large-scale meet, attended by both 4A and 5A teams.
The five MCHS swimmers who attended hit the water hard to attain several state qualifying times.
Coach Meghan Francone said the focus in a big swim meet such as Jeffco is not to worry about the culmination of points against the larger teams.
“We’re going for times and qualifying for state, not where we place against everyone else,” she said.
The 200-yard medley relay team — consisting of senior John Kirk, juniors Matt Hulstine and Spencer Hebert and freshman Brenden Carta — finished 15th, qualifying for state with a time of 1:55.31.
The same foursome later also qualified in the 200-yard freestyle relay, edging out the time at 1:41.26. Hulstine trumped his previous best qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly, hitting a 58.96 and finishing 15th.
He also placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke, qualifying with a time of 1:01.56.
The following are the state qualifiers from the meet:
(Name — event — place — time)
• Matt Hulstine — 100-yard breaststroke — 3 — 1:01.65*
• Matt Hulstine — 100-yard butterfly — 15 — 58.96*
• MCHS — 200-yard medley relay — 15 — 1:55.31*
• MCHS — 200-yard freestyle relay — 16 — 1:41.26*
- 4A state qualifying time
